We choose blasting media based on your home’s conditions and the coatings we’re removing — but most commonly we use a crushed-glass media blend formulated for wood/log restoration. It strips failing coatings efficiently and creates a strong surface for adhesion without the drawbacks of harsher, more aggressive media.
You’ll hear a lot about corn cob and walnut shells. Those can be used in certain situations, but they’re organic/absorbent, and if residue is left in checks or crevices and later gets wet, it can contribute to moisture/biological issues. They’re also typically less efficient at removing tougher, built-up coatings.
Other media (like garnet, soda, slag, etc.) may be used when the situation calls for it — but what matters most is proper media + controlled settings + experienced technique so the wood is protected and the next coating system performs long-term.

Because it’s inside a finished home, the process has to be done differently than exterior blasting:
Full containment and protection of floors, walls, ceilings, and openings
Ideally removing or fully covering furnishings (dust control is everything)
Using interior-appropriate media and controlled technique for wood surfaces
Thorough cleanup and prep before applying the new interior finish system

Most media blasting projects are about a two-week process from start to finish, depending on home size, access, and coating conditions. A typical flow looks like:
Day 1: Site prep and protection (masking, containment, staging). Often we can begin blasting in select areas.
Days 2–5: Media blasting with secondary prep following behind (detail work, osborning, log-ends, problem areas).
Day 6: Full cleanup + final secondary prep, then borate application (when applicable).
Days 7–10: Staining (and caulking/check sealing as needed) to build the new protection system.
Weather, coating build-up, and access can extend or compress the schedule, but this is the general cadence we plan around so you know what to expect before we start.
