FAQs

How do I safely clean or wash interior logs?

Interior logs usually need a gentle clean, not aggressive washing. The goal is to remove dust, oils, and light buildup without soaking the wood or damaging the finish.

Best practice approach:

  • Start with a dry microfiber cloth or a soft brush/vacuum to remove dust

  • For deeper cleaning, use a damp (not wet) cloth with a mild, wood-safe cleaner and work in small sections

  • Avoid saturating checks/gaps and seams—too much water can raise grain or create moisture issues

  • Dry immediately with a clean towel and ensure good airflow

  • For smoke residue, heavy grime, or tacky buildup, it’s better to do a test spot first and use the lightest effective method

What to avoid:

  • Pressure washing (even “light” pressure)

  • Harsh degreasers, bleach, or abrasive pads

  • Soaking the wood or letting cleaner sit too long

If your interior logs have heavy buildup (smoke, cooking oils, old wax/polish, or dark staining), we can recommend the right cleaner and process—or handle it for you—so you don’t accidentally strip the finish or blotch the wood.

You’ve got options, and the right one depends on what’s currently on the wood (unfinished, stained, clear coated, smoked, etc.) and what result you want.

In many cases, we can fully refinish interiors using the same proven processes we use on exteriors—cleaning/prep, coating removal when needed, and applying a new stain/finish system for a brighter, more consistent look.

If the existing finish needs to be removed, interior blasting can be an excellent “reset”, but it must be done the right way. That typically means:

  • Full room protection and containment (walls, floors, ceilings, openings)

  • Removing or fully covering furnishings to protect against dust

  • Using the right media and technique for interior wood surfaces

  • Thorough cleanup and surface prep before the new finish is applied

Because it’s a major process, we’ll walk you through what’s involved, what has to be moved/covered, and what the realistic outcome will be—then build a plan that gets you the look you want without turning your home into a disaster zone.

Yes — interior logs usually need less maintenance than exteriors, but they’re not “set it and forget it.”

Interior wood can still wear from:

  • Sunlight through windows (UV fading near bright rooms)

  • Dry indoor air (especially with wood stoves or forced-air heating)

  • Smoke, cooking oils, and hand contact (darkening and buildup on high-touch areas)

If your interior finish looks dry, blotchy, sticky, or uneven, or you’re seeing fading near windows, it may be time for a clean-and-maintenance coat or a targeted refresh. We can help identify what finish is currently on the wood and recommend the least invasive option to restore a clean, consistent look without overdoing it.
