TRUSTED BY

Your Log Home,

Restored.

Media blasting is the most effective way to remove old finishes, failed stains, UV damage, and surface decay from your log home. By using high-pressure air with fine blasting media, we carefully strip away weathered layers and uncover the solid wood beneath—preparing your home for fresh treatments and long-lasting protection.

At Knaughty Log Restoration, our specialists have the training and experience to do this right, restoring the natural beauty of log homes across Oregon, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Oregon Mountain Cabin – Full Exterior Refinish

The Problem

A cabin outside Bend had layers of failed stain and gray, weather-worn logs.

The Solution

Our crew used corn cob media blasting to safely remove the buildup and restore the natural wood tone. After blasting, the logs were smooth, clean, and ready for a fresh oil-based finish.

The Result

The homeowners were amazed at how new their 30-year-old cabin looked—and relieved knowing the new stain would adhere properly for years to come.

FAQs

Is media blasting safe for my logs?

Yes — when it’s done correctly for log and wood surfaces. Done wrong, it can absolutely damage logs.

The difference comes down to experience and control, not just the machine:

  • Correct media selection for wood (not “whatever sandblasters use”)

  • Controlled pressure and technique so we strip coatings without scarring the grain or rounding log profiles

  • Attention to soft grain, checks, corners, and detail areas where damage happens fastest

  • Proper cleanup and prep so the next stain system bonds the way it should

We treat blasting as a precision process, not a brute-force one. The goal is a clean reset and strong adhesion without sacrificing wood fiber—because you can’t put wood back once it’s removed.

We choose blasting media based on your home’s conditions and the coatings we’re removing — but most commonly we use a crushed-glass media blend formulated for wood/log restoration. It strips failing coatings efficiently and creates a strong surface for adhesion without the drawbacks of harsher, more aggressive media.

You’ll hear a lot about corn cob and walnut shells. Those can be used in certain situations, but they’re organic/absorbent, and if residue is left in checks or crevices and later gets wet, it can contribute to moisture/biological issues. They’re also typically less efficient at removing tougher, built-up coatings.

Other media (like garnet, soda, slag, etc.) may be used when the situation calls for it — but what matters most is proper media + controlled settings + experienced technique so the wood is protected and the next coating system performs long-term.

Yes — in the right situations. Interior blasting can be an excellent way to “reset” dark, smoky, or heavily coated interior logs and bring the wood back to a cleaner, brighter, more uniform surface.

Because it’s inside a finished home, the process has to be done differently than exterior blasting:

  • Full containment and protection of floors, walls, ceilings, and openings

  • Ideally removing or fully covering furnishings (dust control is everything)

  • Using interior-appropriate media and controlled technique for wood surfaces

  • Thorough cleanup and prep before applying the new interior finish system

If your goal is a full interior refinish, we’ll walk you through what needs to be moved/covered, how we control dust, and what kind of results are realistic so there are no surprises.

Most media blasting projects are about a two-week process from start to finish, depending on home size, access, and coating conditions. A typical flow looks like:

  • Day 1: Site prep and protection (masking, containment, staging). Often we can begin blasting in select areas.

  • Days 2–5: Media blasting with secondary prep following behind (detail work, osborning, log-ends, problem areas).

  • Day 6: Full cleanup + final secondary prep, then borate application (when applicable).

  • Days 7–10: Staining (and caulking/check sealing as needed) to build the new protection system.

Weather, coating build-up, and access can extend or compress the schedule, but this is the general cadence we plan around so you know what to expect before we start.
