Insect & Bat Prevention

Insects such as termites, carpenter ants, and wood boring beetles can cause significant structural damage by eating through the wood. Signs of insect damage include visible tunnels, sawdust-like frass and hollow sounding wood. Bats, while not damaging to the wood, can create health issues and structural damage over time through their droppings and urine, which corrode wood and insulation. They can also fit through holes much smaller than they are and fly around the interior of your home. Preventative measures by our crew can mitigate these risks by treating the wood with insect repellants and sealants, install bat prevention devices that allow bats to leave but not re-enter, and ensure that all potential entry points are securely sealed. Regular inspections are also vital to catch and early signs of infestation or nesting, allowing for prompt and effective intervention.

Media Blasting

Media blasting is a highly effective restoration technique that involves using fine grain sand to gently remove old stain, dirt and debris from the surface of log homes. Unlike pressure washing, which can force water deep into the wood and cause long-term damage; or sanding, which can be labor intensive result in uneven surfaces, media blasting provides a consistent, clean finish- while preserving the integrity of the wood. The process involves shooting a stream of abrasive material- such as sand, glass beads, baking soda, corn cobs or walnut shells- at a high velocity to strip away unwanted layers. We choose to use fine-grain sand, because it preps the wood more effectively by opening the wood fibers, which leads to super absorption of the protectant stain in the next step. With media blasting, your log home is left with a smooth, clean surface that enhances the natural beauty of the wood and extends the life of your stain, making it the optimal choice for log home restoration.

Staining

Staining is a crucial step in maintaining the beauty and durability of your log home. After media blasting has prepped the wood, staining helps protect it from the elements while enhancing its natural appearance. There are various types of stains available, each offering different benefits and drawbacks. Oil-based stains penetrate deeply and provide a rich color, but they can attract dirt and are harder to maintain over time. Water-based stains are easier to apply and clean up but may require more frequent reapplication. We recommend using acrylic-based stains, like those from Sashco, (https://www.sashco.com/products/capture-log-stain/) which combine the best of both worlds- they offer deep penetration and a durable finish, while also being easy to maintain. Acrylic stains provide long-lasting protection against UV rays, moisture, and mildew, ensuring that your home remains beautiful and well-protected for years to come.

Chinking

Chinking is an essential process in maintaining the structural integrity and energy efficiency of your log home. It involves sealing the gaps between logs with a flexible, weatherproof material that expands and contracts with the wood. Proper chinking not only prevents drafts, moisture, and pests from entering your home but also enhances its overall appearance. There are various types of chinking materials available, including synthetic and traditional mortar-based options. Traditional mortar can crack over time as logs settle and shift, requiring frequent repairs. In contrast, modern synthetic products offers superior flexibility, durability and ease of application. It adheres strongly to the logs while allowing for natural movement, ensuring long-lasting protection and a clean, finished look. We recommend using high-quality acrylic chinking for its excellent performance and longevity, helping to preserve your log home’s charm while keeping it cozy and energy efficient.

Chemical Stripping

We don’t really recommend applying anything to your home that will introduce moisture to your logs- chemicals included; however, chemical stripping is a more cost-efficient way to remove the existing stain on your log home walls and many people reach out to us opting to go this route due to budget restraints. Chemical stripping is absolutely an option for you if you:

1.Have a water-based stain already on your home (non-oil)
2.Have relatively fresh logs without signs of rot
3.Want it done right but within your budget

Deck Refinishing

Many people love the aesthetic of log homes simply because of their covered porches, often overlooking stunning views and landscapes. Sometimes the decks on log homes receive more damaging UV rays than the rest of the home. Deck refinishing at Log is handled the same way we handle the logs on your home- with care and top-quality products. We can also replace and restore natural log railing, making your deck safe and comfortable for years to come!

Rotten Logs

Log rot is a common concern for all log home owners, but with the right knowledge- it’s easy to catch and address early. Log rot occurs when moisture is trapped in the wood, often due to poor drainage, faulty gutters, or damage to the wood’s protective finish. This can lead to decay and structural damage if not treated promptly. The good news is that log rot is typically easy to spot early on. Look for soft spots, discoloration or cracking in the logs. Once identified, Knaughty Log Restoration can remove the affected wood, treat the area to prevent further decay and replace the damaged sections with new, rot resistant logs. Proper maintenance, like inspections, sealing and ensuring proper water drainage, is key to preventing log rot and keeping your home in excellent condition for years to come.

Cracks (Checks)

Checks are cracks that appear in the logs as they contract and expand due to changes in moisture levels and temperature. While many checks are superficial and do not affect the structural integrity of your home, some can be problematic. Deep, wide checks, especially those facing upward that can collect water, increase the risk of rot by allowing moisture to penetrate deep into the wood. Knaughty Log can help manage and seal these checks effectively. They use specialized sealants that fill the checks, prevent water from accumulating and causing decay. There sealants are designed to be flexible to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of the logs, ensuring the longevity of the repairs.

Maintenance

Routine maintenance is essential to preserving the beauty and longevity of your residence. Without regular care, log homes can suffer from issues such as rot, insect infestation, UV damage and water penetration, all of which can lead to costly repairs. Regular inspections can catch these problems early, before they become severe. A critical part of maintenance is washing the home annually to remove dirt, debris and mildew that can degrade the wood. If your stain and sealant is still new, they will shield the logs from moisture and UV rays, greatly extending the life of your wood.

Interior Care

We don’t just stop at the doorway with our restoration services! If you’re wanting a change of color, repair work to the logs due to flooding, filling in checks or even applying chinking to prevent drafts and infestations, we can do that as well.
